Understanding Dialysis: A Life-Sustaining Treatment

Dialysis is a crucial medical treatment for individuals living with kidney failure. The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste and excess fluids from the blood, maintaining the body’s balance of salts, minerals, and fluids. When a patient's kidneys are no longer able to perform these essential functions, dialysis allows medical professionals to step in.  Dialysis acts as an artificial kidney, performing the filtration necessary for continued life.

Dialysis is not a one-time procedure; it requires regular treatments to ensure that waste and excess fluids are continuously removed from the body. Our nephrologists (kidney specialists) at Nephrology Associates will work with you to determine the most appropriate dialysis schedule and treatment plan based on your specific health needs and lifestyle.

How to Know If You Need Dialysis

Dialysis is typically recommended for individuals with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) or significantly impaired kidney function. Your nephrologist will guide you through the process, from initial diagnosis to determining whether dialysis is the right course of action. In cases where dialysis is not immediately necessary, alternative treatments, such as lifestyle changes and medication, may be recommended to manage your condition and prevent further kidney damage.

If you know you have reduced kidney function and are experiencing symptoms such as swelling due to fluid retention, fatigue, nausea, or vomiting, consult a nephrologist immediately for advice. These symptoms can indicate seriously impaired kidney function, and a thorough evaluation by a kidney specialist will help determine if dialysis is necessary.  Click here to call our Fairhope office and set up a consultation with one of our kidney specialists.

Dialysis Treatments Available on the Baldwin County Eastern Shore

Nephrology Associates offers a variety of dialysis treatments to accommodate the unique needs and preferences of our patients.  Some will not be available at all our dialysis centers in the area, but we'll work with you to find a solution that fits your life.

Hemodialysis: The Original Dialysis Treatment

Hemodialysis is the original and most common form of dialysis, where blood is filtered outside the body using a machine called a dialyzer. This machine acts as an artificial kidney, removing waste products from the blood before returning it to the body. Hemodialysis treatments typically last between 3 to 5 hours and are usually performed three times a week, depending on individual circumstances. Our facilities on the Eastern Shore are equipped to provide this standard treatment in a comfortable and supportive environment.

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD): An Alternative Method

During peritoneal dialysis, the filtration process actually takes place inside the patient’s body. A special fluid called dialysate is introduced into the abdomen, where it absorbs waste products before being drained out. PD can often be done at home, offering greater flexibility and independence for patients. This method is particularly beneficial for those who prefer a more hands-on approach to their treatment.  However, some patients have conditions that mean they're not good candidates for peritoneal dialysis.  Your nephrologist can help you determine whether or not PD is an option for you.

Nocturnal Dialysis: Slow and Steady Overnight Treatment

For patients seeking a more convenient and less disruptive option, nocturnal dialysis may be the ideal choice. This treatment is performed overnight while the patient sleeps, allowing for a slower and gentler dialysis process that may work well for those with busy daytime schedules. Nocturnal dialysis is available at certain Nephrology Associates locations.

Home Hemodialysis (HHD): Comfort and Independence

With home hemodialysis (HHD), patients can receive their dialysis treatments in the comfort of their own homes. HHD offers the same benefits as nocturnal dialysis but with even greater flexibility, as patients can administer the treatment on their own schedule. This option eliminates the need for frequent trips to a dialysis center, making it easier to maintain your daily routine. However, it is important to note that HHD may require the patient to undergo additional training or seek assistance from another person.

Working Shift Dialysis: Accommodating Your Schedule

We understand that many patients have work commitments or other responsibilities that can make scheduling dialysis during regular hours a challenge. That’s why Nephrology Associates offers working shift dialysis options, ensuring that you can receive the treatment you need with less disruption to your lifestyle and obligations.
